SIMON MOSHAPO JNR

Simon Moshapo Jnr is a South African visual artist who moved to Indermark, Polokwane in 1999. In 2015 he completed his National Diploma in Fine Art at the Tshwane University of Technology. He is currently a full-time Artist living and working at August House Johannesburg Gauteng. Moshapo’s current artistic practice includes sculpture, painting, printmaking and drawing.

Simon Moshapo Jnr weaves his artistic practice through contemporary and traditional techniques. Drawing inspiration from his father, Mr Simon Moshapo Snr and the traditional Venda totems, values, morals and proverbs he grew up with, his work is embedded with references and meaning. Reflecting on the rich traditional wood carving history of VAF (Vhavenda Art Foundation) and following in the footsteps of renowned South African sculptors. Moshapo’s work refers to the rich history of the Vhavenda people during their migration. During this time, they took with them the Ngoma Lungundu, a sacred drum used by the Vhavenda people to protect themselves from enemies, poverty, disease and draught. It was regarded as the voice of God (Nwali). The Ngoma Lungundu – never being allowed to touch the ground as per spiritual injunction and beliefs – kept the Venda people united during their migration. The artist is fascinated by the historical and spiritual significance of this as he delves into these stories and myths to contemplate and re-position himself within his personal and cultural heritage.
