Exhibition Statement
Nathaniel Sheppard’s heritage spans from a Christian African American Context, too that of a Muslim Coloured South African one. Sheppard moves through themes of colonialism , cultural cannibalism , and the recycling of oppressive media and misrepresentation of media pertaining to the representation of blackness and black identities throughout history. In Addition to shared conversations /similarities / contradiction between African American and Coloured cultures. Using archival material-visual media in particular-he makes collages, which are then translated into different printmaking mediums and Paintings. Paying homage to the various printing techniques used in the global south and during several civil uprisings and collage artists from both a South African and African American perspective.
