As the first local show of the year for Kalashnikovv Gallery, Boundless features the next generation of young Black women artists with limitless potential to grow in a multitude of directions both material and conceptual. Working with a variety of media and materials that span across acrylics, oil, collage and pastel, yarn on burlap, canvas and paper, this selection echoes the spirit of Cape Town Art Fair’s theme this year – Unbound – to have an unfettered approach to develop what it means to be an emerging voice and young working artist in South Africa at the start of a career.
With subjects that cover themes including gender expression, cultural identity, spirituality, collective memory, representation and challenging stereotypes, they are committed to developing a new language through the lens of black womanhood and with a local perspective on global issues.
Either self-taught or having launched careers from artists’ studios or lecture halls and encapsulating rural and urban environments and backgrounds, they tackle complex social dynamics in nuanced ways.
Primarily through self-portraiture and its subversion, this group of participating artists renews our appreciation for and imagination around all the possibilities available to painting, printmaking, sculpture and textile art.
